Most of the video cables available in the market today are often called coaxial cables. These are the cables that are used to transfer video signals from one point to another.

Why to use Video Cables?

There is no fix usage of video cables. There are a lot of purposes for which these cables are used. There are a lot of advantage of using these cables. Some of these advantages are: * The contrast ratio is improved, * Lesser video distortion, * Cables could be run at longer distances, and * Creation of some new colors.

The types of Video Cables

Video cables are categorized depending upon their application. Few popularly used video cables are: VGA, Component, RGBHV, S-Video, Portable projectors, Composite, and DVI. All these are discussed below in detail:

VGA Video Cables

These cables consist of three rows of fifteen pins each and are a type of monitor cables. These are used to connect a PC to a projector or a PC to computer monitor.

Component Video Cables

If compared to composite or S-video cable these cables provides better quality of image as signals splits into three signals. The color of jacks are Red, Green and Blue. These cables are used for DVD players, television set tuning.

RGBHV Video Cables

These cables are further divided into five cables. This is the only difference otherwise they are almost the same as composite video cables. The video signals are divided into basic colors like Red, Blue and Green. These are used to produce high quality video.

S-Video Cables

The video signals in S-Video cables are divided into luminance and chrominance and are also called SVHS cables. Some of its area of application are set top box, television and VCRs.

Portable Projector Video Cables

These cables are used for small connections like a small room and are portable. These cables consists of a 15 pin VGA but only three of them are used. The video signals are sensed and processed by the projector accordingly.

Composite Video Cables

These cables are most commonly used in Video Cassette Recorders and other stereo devices. There are three basic color codes- White, Yellow and Red. To transfer video signals only one cable is used. The video quality is low but they are still used commonly.

DVI Video cables

These are used to connect video source and the device that is used for display purposes. They are larger then VGA cables.
